Latest news talking about recalls of suspected items containing salmonella and non declared items on labels.

I hate hearing about recalls, because it makes me feel uneasy about anything I buy and eat anywhere.  How do you feel when you hear about product recalls of items that you have considered buying, or have bought?

Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones…

February 08, 2010 By: Halemom Category: Food, Health, News, Nutrition, Opinion

But a pill may save me.  Women have the highest risk for osteoporosis, and I found a recently released article to offer some hope for women that fear they may fall victim to decreasing bone density and injuries as aging occurs, or for those that are already riddled with the condition.

I’ve often wondered if women that are in their reproductive ages, are generally getting enough calcium in their diets to support child bearing and breastfeeding.  If there is a deficit to begin with, then a child is conceived will take the available nutrients from the mother’s body, regardless of intake on the mother’s part, thus leaving the mother at a higher risk for degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis.  I guess I see it as an evolutionary way of keeping our genes going despite the mother, but I may be wrong.

In any case, since women are most often stricken with such a devastating condition, I’d like to help educate women that can have a chance at changing their odds for getting such a debilitating condition.

First, make sure to get enough calcium in your diet.  It sounds pretty simple, but when you look up the recommended daily intake for calcium, it is a very low amount, but the amounts should be consumed daily.  Women that are lactating or pregnant should be consuming additional calcium to meet daily requirements.  Also, remember that vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium by the body, so if you don’t go out in the sun very often for prolonged periods, you may also want to consider taking a supplement, with advice from your doctor.

Guess what, taking in enough calcium can also relieves the pain of PMS!  If you regularly suffer from PMS, then you may want to consider increasing calcium intake to relieve the symptoms.

Osteoporosis isn’t only a disease that affects women, it can affect men as well, but the toughest part about osteoporosis is that it isn’t recognized until large amounts of bone density has been lost.  Start early to help reduce your chances of getting osteoporosis and potentially having to take a daily pill for an undetermined amount of time.

To your health and strong bones!

Stroller Recall

January 22, 2010 By: Halemom Category: Baby!, Miscellaneous, News

In case you haven’t heard: stop using your Graco stroller and make sure you are not using a model on the list.

What I find particularly disturbing is the fact that these strollers have been on the market for several years now, but they are barely being pulled due to incidents that have been reported.

I think there should be more testing and complete safety inspection when it comes to items that are going to hold our most precious cargo. Companies shouldn’t be allowed to put something on the market ghat hasn’t gone through a complete third party testing to ensure complete and utter safety.  Maybe there should be a 6 month testing period before new products are allowed on the market.

Photoxpress_3858444Imagine buying a stroller to cart your little munchkin, then while putting up the canopy to protect your little tykes face from the sun, your child is wiggling around and reaches for the canopy, and snap, your child’s fingertips have just been amputated or at the very least severely cut.

I don’t wish that on anybody, and couldn’t imagine the horror I would be experiencing if that were to happen to my family. If you were affected by the strollers in question, I hope you are coping well with the situation.

How about you, do you think there should be more oversight before these types of products go on the market? Who should be responsible for ensuring the safety of crucial items like strollers so that we can avoid devastating incidents from occurring?

Holy Hoax, Batman!

January 21, 2010 By: Halemom Category: Health, Health Care, News, Nutrition, Opinion

dollarsReading this article just made me upset.  I wanted to do the right think for my daughter, being in a high risk group, but with what we know now, the swine flu was not all that pandemic, and not much to worry about.

I feel fooled, and even though my better judgment was to not get the vaccine for my daughter, I still went ahead from the fear of having the risk of my daughter dying from a severe infection of the swine flu, amongst other things.  I found it weird that I would not have to pay for a vaccine that was so crucial to get, but now I understand why.  It’s not that I directly had to pay for the vaccine out of my own pocket, but my government already forked over the money for truck loads of vaccines that are now being disposed of in masses.

It makes me sick that there would be such a scam on a global scale to fear people into getting a vaccine that they didn’t need.  Trusting the body is hard to do, especially when you have doctors and professionals telling  you that you need to do this and need to do that, but where is the urge to get a nutritionally complete and balanced diet to promote a strong immune system to be able to fend of infections without vaccines?

Well, there’s no money in promoting natural ways to avoid getting sick and to avoid many ailments, but there is money is promoting the popping of pills and convincing us that we need injections.  When are we going to stop letting fear drive our decision making, and start fighting back against these big companies that only have the bottom line in mind, and health of the general public is just a laughing point.

Anyway, don’t mind me while I steam about this.  What do you think about the whole situation?  Do you think it was just an elaborate scheme to get millions of people to buy into the idea of getting vaccinated, or was there a legitimate worry and the government was right in forking over millions of dollars to big pharma to keep people from dying?  Do you think there are other worries down the road from the promotion of vaccines that we don’t know about the long term effects of?

Let me know where you stand, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Medicine Cabinet

January 16, 2010 By: Halemom Category: FDA, Miscellaneous, News, Opinion

If you haven’t heard yet, there’s been a recall on certain medicines that are common over the counter items.

When it comes to medicines, most people don’t think about them being recalled, but in this instance the culprit was some sort of chemical used to prolong the life of them medicine, causing a “moldy” odor.  Gross!  Apparently, there were claims that after taking the medicines included in the article would cause nausea and stomach cramps, and other not-so-fun bodily reactions.

I know most people are used to brand names, but I personally like to buy generic, store brand medicines that are way less expensive, and have to keep up on quality to stay competitive with the big brand names.

Not only that, and lots of people think I’m weird for it, but I prefer to delay taking any sort of medicine, especially over the counters until I can either no longer take the pain, or I’ve pinpointed the cause of the problem, and know it will be resolved with a pop of a pill.

It’s probably weird, but I believe, in some twisted way, that it makes me more aware of my body, and makes me a little bit stronger.  Don’t get me wrong, over the counter medicines have their place, but they can also easily be abused, and can also mask ailments that without proper treatment can turn life threatening.

Anyway, it’s upsetting to hear that even our over the counter medicines aren’t safe from contaminants, but it’s good to know that the ones that are causing illness in people are being pulled off the shelves.

Please take a moment and take a look in your medicine cabinet and go check if it is a product that has been recalled.

Have you been affected by the recall?  What do you think about the recall?

Learn how to respond to a recall, no matter what the circumstance.
