Food Recall Information

March 05, 2010 By: Halemom Category: FDA, Food, Miscellaneous, News, Opinion

Latest news talking about recalls of suspected items containing salmonella and non declared items on labels.

I hate hearing about recalls, because it makes me feel uneasy about anything I buy and eat anywhere.  How do you feel when you hear about product recalls of items that you have considered buying, or have bought?

Medicine Cabinet

January 16, 2010 By: Halemom Category: FDA, Miscellaneous, News, Opinion

If you haven’t heard yet, there’s been a recall on certain medicines that are common over the counter items.

When it comes to medicines, most people don’t think about them being recalled, but in this instance the culprit was some sort of chemical used to prolong the life of them medicine, causing a “moldy” odor.  Gross!  Apparently, there were claims that after taking the medicines included in the article would cause nausea and stomach cramps, and other not-so-fun bodily reactions.

I know most people are used to brand names, but I personally like to buy generic, store brand medicines that are way less expensive, and have to keep up on quality to stay competitive with the big brand names.

Not only that, and lots of people think I’m weird for it, but I prefer to delay taking any sort of medicine, especially over the counters until I can either no longer take the pain, or I’ve pinpointed the cause of the problem, and know it will be resolved with a pop of a pill.

It’s probably weird, but I believe, in some twisted way, that it makes me more aware of my body, and makes me a little bit stronger.  Don’t get me wrong, over the counter medicines have their place, but they can also easily be abused, and can also mask ailments that without proper treatment can turn life threatening.

Anyway, it’s upsetting to hear that even our over the counter medicines aren’t safe from contaminants, but it’s good to know that the ones that are causing illness in people are being pulled off the shelves.

Please take a moment and take a look in your medicine cabinet and go check if it is a product that has been recalled.

Have you been affected by the recall?  What do you think about the recall?

Turn Off The Light!

January 11, 2010 By: Halemom Category: FDA, News

Have you ever had a migraine before? You know, one of those gut wrenching, terrible, I want to hide in a black hole and never come out, type of headaches?  Have you ever shouted at someone, turn off the light!  Well, if you are a sufferer of chronic migraines, there may be hope!

Has it ever been a thought as to why the light is so painful when having a severe migraine?  Well, there is recent research, covered by FoxNews, done in mice and humans that finds there is actually a visual pathway in the brain that causes that light sensitivity during migraines in not only people with normal eyesight, but in blind individuals as well.

As the article notes, it was a finding in the rodents, so more research is necessary, but I think there’s hope!  Imagine if there was a pill you could take to get rid of those awful days of migraines where the light feels like it’s setting your head on fire.  Think about how much business productivity would skyrocket because people would no longer have migraines as an excuse (well if they have health insurance, at least.)  Employers would rejoice AND the insurance companies would more than likely cover such a prescription to be filled.

There’s a lot of science technical jargon in the article and it’s just a little confusing, but there seems to be hope in the arena and maybe we’ll be hearing about a new migraine medication that will block that light sensitivity that is linked to the optic nerve.

NearVision CK

January 10, 2010 By: Halemom Category: FDA, Sponsored Conversations

I was just checking out my account at payperpost.com, and I realized I missed an opportunity to talk about a new procedure called NearVision CK  (Conductive Keratoplasty.)  Apparently it’s an easy procedure that will reduce the need for eyeglasses months at a time.  It would be a procedure done in the doctor’s office, and would only take about 20 minutes.  Not bad.  I’ve never heard of it before, but you can check out more information here, at Stahl Eye.

Has anyone ever gotten this procedure done? Seems like it might be worth looking into.

Burden of Proof

January 09, 2010 By: Halemom Category: FDA, Health, Opinion, Uncategorized

When I took a look at my site recently, I saw that there is an ad for “e-cigarettes.” I remember when my husband was trying to quit, he asked me if it was ok if he buy some.   At that point, I had never heard of them before, so I told him that it would probably be safer to get more information, and find reviews, but cold turkey was probably the best bet.

I have to admit that I used to be a “social smoker,” (if that is even a real term) but that was in my indiscriminate days and is but a distant memory. Quitting cold turkey is the best way, but that’s just from limited experience.

Anyway, when I saw this ad on my site, I decided that I would do a little bit of research into their health and safety, because I would not want to support something that is dangerous. These electronic cigarettes were spurred in response to laws banning indoor smoking, and are pretty controversial at the moment.

Upon my research, I found an article from early 2009 discussing how hazy the FDA is on these particular cigarettes.  Apparently there is no real scientific data on the e-cigaretes besides lots of promises that since there is no smoke that it will not cause cancer.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think there is a burden of proof that someone must provide, especially since nicotine is an addictive substance.  My only question is who should carry this burden of proof?  It’s certainly not up to the consumer, as they are simply looking to satiate their habit without breaking laws.  Should it be the company?  Or perhaps the FDA should regulate these cigarettes that have no proof of being “healthier” than smoking actual cigarettes.

What do you think?  Have you had any experience with e-cigarettes?  Have you tried to quit smoking?  Are there any smoking bans in your area?  I don’t think it’s a federal ban yet, but I may be wrong.
