Please shine down on me! First, I hope everyone had a happy 4th of July. We are truly lucky to be here, and I love this time of year when people gather around to be thankful for the independence we have in the U.S.
Here is a short clip of the finale of fireworks in Austin, Texas. We were standing on the roof of a parking garage near the greenbelt. It was a bit of a distance, but we didn’t want to go downtown and deal with traffic, but we were still able to hear the fireworks going off. Hope you enjoy!
Anyway, the reason for the title’s post is about a recent article published talks about the necessity of vitamin D during pregnancy in avoiding death, or preventable diseases amongst children.
The article goes on to talk about how simple it is to get Vitamin D: the sun, and through diet, such as through milk, or fortified non-dairy milks.
Most importantly noted in the article is that extra vitamin D be available during pregnancy and breastfeeding as to avoid serious illnesses in both mother and child.
If you are an expecting mother, or still breastfeeding, I hope that this information gets to you!
To Mommy’s and baby’s health and gratefulness for independence,
~Hale Mom

My daughter works in a building all day. She would be tired all the time. Recently she was diagnosed with Vit. D deficency… Spending more time in the sun is definately good for us all. thanks for your post!
You’re welcome. It is not only necessary for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, but for everyone that wants their calcium to be absorbed for strong bones.
@Gina, yes it is, I believe it is 15-20minutes for fair skin, 30min-1hr for medium, and 1hr-1hr and a half for dark skinned people. Also, that is without sunscreen. Sunscreen, although is good to have on for prolonged sun exposure, it can block vitamin D production in the body, and can lead to vitamin D deficiency if it is not being consumed in the diet.
Thank you to both of you for commenting!
Great tip, Erica. It is a major thing nowadays because so many of us spend the majority of our days indoors. I’ve even heard it should be 15 minutes daily outdoors without any sunscreen. I haven’t verified it, but it might be something to consider.
