I’m such a proud parent. My daughter has been successfully climbing just about any obstacle that gets in her way, including myself. The only thing, is that with climbing, comes danger.
All sorts of dangers that I had never even thought about too much until the last few weeks since her 1st birthday. What I thought was hilarious was when daddy decided the solution was to protect her from the sofa by guarding it off with the superyard gate. If only I had gotten a picture. Priceless.
With her new mobility and talents, she has decided that she wants to do just about everything by herself. She wants to be independent. That means, absolutely no spoon feeding (and refusal to eat until mommy is compliant,) no hand holding, and just about anything else that needs parental supervision.
It makes me proud, but also makes me sad. I thought that surely that little girl would need me for much longer, but she is flowering so quickly, it’s scary really. Soon she’s going to be asking to go to sleepovers, go out with boys, and then drive. It all started with a simple climb on the sofa.
The great part is that she thinks it’s a game. Maybe that’s my fault. Every time she gets on the sofa, I run to get to her, and in a funny voice, tell her to get off the sofa. We’re always afraid that she’s going to fall, so we rush to her, but she just laughs hysterically, trying to evade us. I decided that instead of keeping her from the sofa with a massive gate, that the most practical way to deal with the issue was to continue to show her how to get on and off the sofa (or bed,) safely. I feel that empowering her with knowledge is more valuable than only trying to keep her from falling.
Not only that, but she actually is excited about helping around the house, ALREADY! Yes, be jealous! It’s the cutest thing too. She has decided she is going to help sweep and take the dishes to the kitchen when we’re washing them. It’s awesome that she’s showing an interest in helping us clean the house.
Now that she’s more independent, and has tons of energy, I do sometimes run out of ideas to get her out, away from the house. It’s so hard, especially with some limitations on what we can do, and when, but I found a really good source that will help us now and in the future.
It’d be great if it came in handy for oth
er moms as well. The reason I’m stoked about it is because when a parent decides to choose the deal on a fun activity that’s offered by savvysource, the parent can choose a school to donate 5% of the ticket to, and another 5% will go to a scholarship fund for parents to help afford preschool for their children. *Disclaimer, the savvysource link will also direct 5% of purchase to this blog* Help yourself find a fun activity (right now only in select areas,) help preschools, help kids, help communities, and help HaleMom.Com stick around.
Sounds like a great deal to me! I can’t wait to take my daughter on the different picks the savvysource editors. I believe that the local deal for Austin today is a family (4,) annual membership to the Austin Zoo ($100 value.)
My husband and I were actually just talking about taking baby bear back to the zoo soon, and what a better opportunity. Have you been to the Austin Zoo? Let me tell you, it’s actually pretty awesome to get so close to the animals! Can’t wait for baby bear to go back, maybe we’ll see you there too!

On the sofa thing, you are going to have to let her fall once to understand the danger. Today Ian took a tumble off our bed he was scared but laughed once he calmed down.
haha, yeah, she has fallen, but she’s still so brave. Can’t wait to see you soon!
Wow. I can’t believe she’s one already! Yes, once they start climbing and walking, it’s all over.
I KNOW! Neither can I! It seems like just yesterday that I was bringing her home and not even having the slightest clue of what to do! Lol, we’ve made it so far, and it really is all over now! lol. She doesn’t ever want us to hold her hand when she’s walking. SO stubborn…I don’t know where she gets it from! Lol!
