What's In Your Sandwich?

by Erica on May 18, 2010

With the heightened awareness around foods and links to certain diseases, it’s no wonder a study was conducted to find a correlation between processed foods and heart disease and diabetes.

According to the article from Reuters linked above, “They found that on average, each 1.8 oz (50 grams) daily serving of processed meat a day — one to two slices of deli meats or one hot dog — was associated with a 42 percent higher risk of heart disease and a 19 percent higher risk of developing diabetes.”

I find this article interesting, since I see sandwich advertisers promote sandwiches as a way to lose weight, but much is not known of the other risks eating highly processed meats carries.

It certainly can’t be very healthy or natural to eat high amounts of processed foods, especially considering the high amounts of preservatives and sodium.

The importance also lays on what we feed our children.  I remember growing up, hot dogs, sausage and lunch meats were preferred amongst not only my family, but also that of my relatives.  No one thought twice about the potential harms of these foods since they were the cheaper options to feed a lot of people.

Now that I’m in charge of not only my health, but that of my family as well, it’s nice to know that there are studies being conducted so that the word can get out to people that might not know any better, or can’t afford premium none processed meats.

I know the study seems like something everybody should know, but if people start demanding better quality foods, and more regulation, that’s what we will get.  Otherwise, our children will grow up, and not know or realize the risks.  I want to live in a world where my food wont harm my family or myself, and I don’t have to go through such a big ordeal to get foods that won’t affect me in some hidden way.

Companies should be held accountable for their actions and products, and offer products that do not put people’s health at risk. I have to be honest, I occasionally eat sandwiches with deli meat, and having a study like this has made me realize the risks of eating those foods, and will more than likely affect my food choices down the road.

How about you?  Do you eat processed meats more than once a week? What are your thoughts?  Should there be more regulations on foods such as processed meats?

We probably do simply because there is not enough time in a day. Too much to do, not enough time. It’s quick and easy, especially when dad is on a night shift and not home anyways.

I hear that. Perhaps there should be more easy alternatives. Something that seems so harmless and easy can potentially cause unwanted problems.
