Turn Off The Light!

by Erica on January 11, 2010

Have you ever had a migraine before? You know, one of those gut wrenching, terrible, I want to hide in a black hole and never come out, type of headaches?  Have you ever shouted at someone, turn off the light!  Well, if you are a sufferer of chronic migraines, there may be hope!

Has it ever been a thought as to why the light is so painful when having a severe migraine?  Well, there is recent research, covered by FoxNews, done in mice and humans that finds there is actually a visual pathway in the brain that causes that light sensitivity during migraines in not only people with normal eyesight, but in blind individuals as well.

As the article notes, it was a finding in the rodents, so more research is necessary, but I think there’s hope!  Imagine if there was a pill you could take to get rid of those awful days of migraines where the light feels like it’s setting your head on fire.  Think about how much business productivity would skyrocket because people would no longer have migraines as an excuse (well if they have health insurance, at least.)  Employers would rejoice AND the insurance companies would more than likely cover such a prescription to be filled.

There’s a lot of science technical jargon in the article and it’s just a little confusing, but there seems to be hope in the arena and maybe we’ll be hearing about a new migraine medication that will block that light sensitivity that is linked to the optic nerve.
