Motherhood and Sleep

by Erica on October 21, 2009

As a new mother, I have gone through the ups and downs of sleep deprivation and I’m at a point where I could be getting enough sleep during the night, but something compels me not to. Everyone, including the hospital staff as you leave the hospital, tells you that you should sleep when your baby does. As for me, it seems almost impossible to get sleep at any time of the day. My darling daughter normally only wakes up about once during the night time, and very early in the morning when daddy is off to work. You’d think that I would be able to sleep soundly though the night, right? I used to be able to stay awake all night and stay awake most of the day until after I got pregnant and after I gave birth.

I’ve tried power naps before, but sometimes I seem that I don’t get any sleep. On the weekends I try to sleep in while my husband helps with the baby, but even then, with breastfeeding and all, I still feel energy sapped. I suppose that a large part of the sleep deprivation has to do with breastfeeding and the caloric demands, but despite all my efforts, I can’t get into any regular sleep schedule. Anyway, I’m going to try to get a decent night’s sleep, but I wonder how other mother’s feel about the evasiveness of sleep in new motherhood. Please feel free to tell me your stories and what you do to get a good night’s rest. Thanks, and good night!
